Yangon International Airport (Burmese: ; MLCTS: ran kun a. prany prany hcuing ra le hcip.) (IATA: RGN, ICAO: VYYY) is the primary international airport of Myanmar and is located in Mingaladon Township, Yangon. The airport was built in 1947 by the Calcutta Metropolitan Airports Authority. When it was built, the airport was regarded as the best in South East Asia. The government began the construction of a new terminal in 2005, which is expected to finish in 2007. The runway has also been extended to 11,200ft, to accommodate heavier aircraft.

[edit] New Terminal
The new terminal of Yangon International Airport will be able to accommodate bigger aircraft and handle more passengers when work on extending its runway and upgrading its facilities is completed. The completion of the runway extension will enable Boeing 747 airplanes to use the airport. The work on extending the runway from 8100 feet to 11,200 feet has done. The runway extension was part of an upgrade which began in April 2003.The upgrade will nearly double the size of the airport terminal.
The length of the two-storey building will be increased from 340 feet to 800 feet and its width from 140 feet to 200 feet. The expansion of the terminal will enable the airport to handle 2.7 million passengers a year. The existing terminal will be used for domestic flights and the extension will handle passengers on international flights. The new building will be capable of handling 900 arriving and departing passengers simultaneously. Arriving and departing passengers will be processed on separate floors to avoid congestion. The upgrade will also see the terminal equipped with an automated baggage handling system, an integrated check-in system and four air bridges capable of handling four Boeing 747s at the same time. The new building will also include special lounges for use by government officials and business people and there will be a two-storey car park with space for about 340 vehicles. As part of the project, the airport apron will be widened and lengthened by 600 feet in either direction. The current airport is rudimentary, offering only limited services. In addition, international services from Taiwan are given second-class status because of warm Chinese-Burmese relations.
