[edit] Description
Yumi is the oldest member of the group, being one year older than the rest of them; her age gives her the title of the "mature" one of the group, who looks after the younger members of the team, especially Jeremie. She is 14 years old, in grade 10, 5.41' tall, and weighs 110.2 pounds.
On Earth, she wears a black turtleneck sweater that has long sleeves and exposes her lower stomach. Her hair is usually left hanging down in a cropped hairstyle. She also wears black pants, and a pair of boots. When she and Odd switch bodies, Odd comes to school wearing a different outfit consisting of black pants, a green sweater-vest with an orange shirt underneath, fingerless mesh gloves, and a fur cap with cat ears on top. Odd claims to have gotten the clothes from her closet.
In Lyoko, she has an outfit modeled after the outfits worn by geisha and oiran. Elements of both are used to make up the outfit. It comes with a short-sleeved/hemmed kimono over red tights, black thigh-length boots, red eye liner, red blush on her cheeks, a white-painted face and neck, and some red on her lips to complete the look; in the first season a small part of her lower lip has more red than the upper lip. Her hair is bunched up into a small bun and the rest is left hanging down. Three bangs are also left hanging. Yumi's Lyoko ID card shows a stylized impression of a leafy flowering plant: a sakura, a Japanese cherry blossom. In Garage Kids her kimono sleeves were longer, like that of a furisode. Concept art for the fourth season shows her wearing a form-fitting, black and red ninja-esque outfit with her hair down (like her hairstyle on Earth) instead of in a bun.[1] She retains her dual iron fans, and her body has a bustier, sexier figure than her previous virtual incarnation.
[edit] Discussion
Although sometimes a bit short-tempered, Yumi is very clever. She deals with a few personal conflicts, most notably the fact that her parents have been known to have a somewhat unstable relationship, which makes her sad and sometimes left angry. She also makes important decisions in the heat of things. In Lyoko, she is usually the one giving orders, though Odd tends to share this responsibility on occasion, much to his delight. She also uses this authority in the real world. The best example of this would be in the second season episode "Cold War", when she commands Thomas Vincent to take Hervé and Sissi out of the snowstorm and back inside Kadic, where they would be safe from the snowstorm and warmed up in the boiler room.
Yumi also seems to have a few mutual feelings for Ulrich, though both are reluctant to admit anything to the other. This reluctance ends up causing incidents that strain their relationship, such as Ulrich's friendship with Emily. They always work their issues out, though they never admit to anything. In the episode "Routine", however, Yumi and Ulrich almost kiss in the Desert sector after Ulrich saves Yumi from falling into the digital void, but a return trip occurs just before they are able to do so. Afterwards, they decide not to tell anyone about it, and the same reluctance persists in later episodes.
When William shows up in the second season, their feelings for each other are again thrown into doubt. Several episodes have both Ulrich and William competing for her affection. Yumi is still more interested in Ulrich, though. In the episode "The Key", it seems as if Ulrich is about to admit his feelings to her, but a phone call from Jeremie prevents him from saying anything. Unfortunately, in Season 3, Yumi finally confronts Ulrich on the topic and tells him that it would be best if they just remained friends.
Yumi tends to receive the most of Xana's abuse, having been trapped by him twice, replaced with a fake version of herself by Xana another time, and has even been robbed of her digital genetic code by the Scyphozoa, preventing her rematerialization until Aelita extracted the information from Xana's data in Carthage. She is also the only one of the group that has fallen into the digital void ("Cruel Dilemma"), and nearly fell in again on two occasions after that. In the first season, one week of episodes had Yumi attacked almost exclusively ("Cruel Dilemma" to "The Girl of the Dreams"). The week has since been dubbed "Pick on Yumi Week."
Yumi comes from Japan, specifically from Tokyo, Japan's capital. It was never stated explicitly where her mother came from, but it is hinted that she came from Kyoto in the episode "The Chips Are Down".
Because she is from Japan, Yumi is very proud of her homeland and its culture, as seen in the episode "The Girl of the Dreams", and she gets very touchy about her being confused for a Chinese girl or when Chinese is spoken in her presence.
Yumi's name might originate from Yumi (弓矢) which is the Japanese term for bows used in the practice of Kyudo (弓道, Japanese archery). The yumi is exceptionally tall (standing over two meters), surpassing the height of the archer, and Yumi herself is the tallest member of the group. Yumi's name translates from Japanese as "beauty of the stone mountain."
[edit] Skills
Like Ulrich, Yumi knows Pencak Silat and practices with him on occasion. She is also a capable gymnast. On Lyoko, she uses these skills to perform multiple handsprings and other feats of agility.
To defend herself in Lyoko, Yumi uses two tessen fans that unfold into razor sharp, frisbee-like discs. She can throw them to slice enemies in half, after which they return to her hand. Few things will stop the fans with the exception of the landscape or well-placed laser blasts. The fans also double as shields that absorb and deflect any laser blast. The fans, however, cannot hinder a Megatank and are blown away on contact. They can block lasers regardless of whether or not Yumi is holding them, as seen in the episode "Common Interest". The fans are light pink with a flower pattern on them. She used only one in the first season, but after "A Great Day", she started using two. In the episode "Franz Hopper", a ghost in the guise of Franz Hopper improved Yumi's tessen fans. The fans could now fly longer and made blocking laser blasts much easier, seemingly guiding her hand for her. Once the fake was revealed, she lost the improved weapons.
As a secondary ability, Yumi is telekinetic on Lyoko, allowing her to move any object with her mind. Currently, it's been shown to work on almost any object. If large enough, the objects can be used to crush monsters. It hasn't been tested on monsters directly, however. The ability takes no life points to use, but Yumi has to concentrate intently on what she wishes to move, limiting her mobility. The size and number of objects directly affects just how much she has to concentrate. At the most, she can walk or toss a fan at a nearby enemy, though not very effectively. Using the ability for an extended period of time will drain her (virtual) energy, leaving her unable to move for a short period.
Yumi uses the Overwing, a hovering scooter developed by Jeremie to enable faster travel while in Lyoko. It's capable of flight, but is a large and weak target for Xana's monsters. She usually carries Aelita on the Overwing during missions.
[edit] Trivia
- Yumi's father's name is Takeo Ishiyama. Her mother's name has not been given.
- When travelling to the factory through the sewers, Yumi uses a skateboard.
- In "A Fine Mess", the computer readout shows a picture of Yumi's virtual hairstyle in 2-D. The picture transitions from a 3-D image to a 2-D image with the same hairstyle, but not the same outfits. It is seen again slightly later in the episode when Odd wakes up in her body. Yumi typically has this hairstyle when she goes to bed each night.
- Yumi's hairstyle and wearing of black clothes strongly resembles that of Hotaru Tomoe from the anime metaseries Sailor Moon.
- In several episodes, a Totoro doll can be seen in her room. The doll is eventually replaced by a Totoro-facsimile.
- With the exception of all the recurring teachers outside Jim and Sissi's father, Yumi was the only character whose last name was actually stated aloud by any of the other characters during the first season.
- In "Routine," Yumi clearly admitted that she was Ulrich's girlfriend.
