Bhí sé ina léachtóir in Ollscoil Oxford ó 1989 ar aghaidh, agus maireann sé i mBaile Átha Cliath anois. Bronnadh an Duais Nobel sa Litríocht air ar an 9 Nollaig 1995 i Stócólm, sa tSualainn.
