लक्ष्मीप्रसाद देवकोटा (जन्म बिसं १९६६ (सन् १९०९), मृत्यु बिसं २०१६ (सन् १९५९)) नेपाली साहित्यका महाकवि हुन्। देवकोटा नेपाली साहित्यका बिभिन्न विधामा कलम चलाउने बहुमुखी प्रतिभाका धनी थिए। उनले कविता र निबन्धविधामा गरेका योगदानहरू उच्च कोटिको मानिन्छ। उनले मुनामदन, सुलोचना, शाकुन्तल, जस्ता अमर कृतिहरू लेखेका थिए। बिशेष गरी मुना मदन कृतिका लागि उनी सबैभन्दा प्रख्यात छन्।

[परिवर्तन्] सुरुवाति जीवन
देवकोटा पण्डित तिलमाधव र अमर राज्य लक्ष्मी देवीका तेस्रा छोरा थिए। उनी धोबीधारा, काठमाण्डौँमा तिहारको लक्ष्मी पुजाका दिन जन्मेका थिए। उनले सानै उमेर देखि कवितामा आफ्नो प्रतिभा देखाउन थाले।
पछि उनले नेपाली साहित्यमा रुमानी (स्वच्छन्दतावाद) को सुरुवात गरि नयाँपुस्ताका लेखकहरूलाई निक्कै प्रभाव पारे। उनि एक आधुनिक कविका रुपमा बिकास हुँदै नेपाली साहित्यमा आफ्नो उच्च ओहदा कायम गरे, जसलाई धेरैजनाहरू नक्कल गर्न खोज्दछन्।
उनले सहनशीलता, सहयोगी भावना र दयाको उपदेश दिन्थे। कामबाट घर फर्किदै गर्दा, एक दिन, उनका सामुन्ने एक माग्ने पैसा माग्दै आयो। जाडोले कठ्याङ्ग्रिएको देखेर देवकोटाले आफैँले लाइराखेको कोट फुकालेर त्यस माग्नेलाई दिए।
देवकोट सन १९०९मा जन्मिदा, देशमा राणा शासन थियो। राणाहरू चाहन्थे जनताहरूले शिक्षा नपाउन, तर धेरै चोटिको प्रयत्नपछि देवकोटाको परिवारले उनलाई काठमाण्डौँ उपत्यकाको एकमात्र विद्यालय दरवार स्कुलमा भर्ना गरिदिए। देवकोटाले आफ्नो पहिलो कविता यही स्कुलमा लेखे, र भनिन्छ, उनले आफ्ना कविता साथीहरू र गुरुहरूलाई सुनाउने गर्दथे। धेरै पटक साथीहरूले उनले त्यस्ता उत्कृष्ट कविताहरू लेख्दा छक्क पर्दथे, तर उनका शिक्षकहरू त्यस कलिलो प्रतिभाबाट निक्कै प्रभाबित थिए।
सन् १९२५ मा देवकोटा त्रि-चन्द्र कलेजमा बिज्ञान बिषयमा भर्ना भए। बिज्ञानमा प्रमाणपत्र तहको अध्यन पुरा गरेपछि उनले मानविकी सङ्कायमा सरे। सन् १९२९मा उनले आफ्नो स्नातक तहको अध्यन पुरा गरे पछि सन् १९३१ मा छात्रबृत्ति लिएर अङ्ग्रेजीमा स्नातकोत्तर पठ्ने आशामा उनि भारतको पटना गए। अङ्ग्रेजी बिषयमा स्थान नपाएपछि उनले कानून पढे।

After he received his bachelor's of law, he returned home and endured a series of personal crises. His mother, father, and two-month old daughter died within two years. Those tragic events shattered him and he became a chain smoker. In later years, with the premature death of his two young sons, Prakash Devkota and Krishna Devkota, he broke down completely. He spent some time in a mental institution.
To add further misery, by 1958, Devkota was diagnosed with cancer and three inches of cancerous colon was removed in India, but he knew death was approaching him, so he stayed up late into the night to continue his writing. One year later, he died.
He wrote to a friend while he was in Santa Bhawan Hospital, "Death stands before me. I search for constellations in the sky but can find none. I cannot give peace to myself. If I could rise, I would kill myself and my children."
Throughout his life, Laxmi Prasad Devkota denounced God, until he was on his death bed, when he recited, "Aakhir ma shree Krishna rahecha ek", which meant, " in the end, lord Krishna is but one".

Devkota was a versatile and prolific writer, who left no branch of literature untouched in the course of his brief career. He has written numerous epics, long narrative poems, essays, stories, plays, novels, songs, and criticisms. His essays read like poetry and are much admired for both content and style. Devkota was the first to begin writing epics in Nepali literature and his magnum opus "Muna-Madan" remains a best seller even five decades after his death. He also served as Nepal's Education Minister, and was a professor at Tri-Chandra College.
Devkota had the ability to write poems very quickly -- he wrote the Shakuntal in three months, the Sulochana epic in 10 days and Kunjini in a single day. Nepali poetry soared to new heights with Devkota's groundbreaking poetry. "Muna-Madan," a long narrative poem in popular folk metre, begins the end of the Sanskrit tradition in Nepali literature. "Pagal" ["Mad"] is another of his ground-breaking works.
